Send Us Your Shelf Porn!

Welcome to another edition of Send Us Your Shelf Porn. Our guest this week is Kurt Young, who hails from Ottawa, Ontario, and works for the Canadian federal government.

Thanks by the way to all those who’ve been sending photos in or just emailing comments and suggstions. Your efforts and thoughts are always much appreciated. As a reward, I’ll refrain from my usual pleas for material this week and let Kurt take over …

My collection is split between two cases in my “games room” – this is where I relax/hide from the world with my Xbox, Wii, or a comic. I stopped collecting comics (floppies) early in high school but rediscovered them near the end of my university days. Since then, I’ve been collecting them as trades only.

My collection is mostly Marvel but I do have some Vertigo and Wildstorm series as well as a little mainstream DC stuff. I do collect some OGN stuff. Other than “Runaways” and “Y”, it’s the only stuff I can convince my wife to read.

I am a huge format junkie and just love the slipcase editions. Unfortunately for my wallet, this means I often buy the same collection twice – once in a cheap TPB and once in an absolute or definitive edition. I’m usually able to sell or trade some of the duplicates, but I have a large stock pile I keep meaning to put on ebay. I may end up just donating them to a library.

I’m a huge completist and always have the compulsion to fill the gaps in my collection (even when I don’t have a strong desire to read what I’m missing). My biggest pet peeve is publishers’ seemingly random decisions on changing the format of books. I’ve seen some series flip between oversized hardcover, trade paperback, premier hardcover and back again. Even though, content-wise, they are usually identical to the cheaper paperbacks, I don’t mind spending a bit more on the hard covers.

I don’t have any comic art (yet), I do have one commission piece that I haven’t hung yet. It was a piece I had an artist I met at an convention do – my wedding party as superheroes. In addition to these I had her do one small picture of each party member with either my me or my wife as gifts to each. She did an amazing job and kind of wish I could have kept them for myself instead of giving them away. Her name is Agnes Garbowska and her web sites are here and here.
