Send us your shelf porn!

Welcome to this week’s edition of Send Us Your Shelf Porn. Today we’re joined by Douglas Nasluchacz of Riverside, California, who has amassed an impressive collection of comic-related memorabilia over the past 30 years. Rather than waste time on an intro, let’s jump right in …

I have been collecting for about 40 years – seriously for the last 20 or so. I started with a copy of Legion of Superheroes WAAAAYYYY back in 1965 or so. Since then I have pretty much a DC fan. Comic books are what made me want to read since elementary school days.

The collection has over 5,000 comics, over 500 graphic novels and books, 100 or so magazines (mostly Spirit repirnts from the 70’s and 80’s) and tons of comics figures. The oldest comic I have is a Spirit section from 1947 (not Will Eisner) followed by a Captain Marvel and the Marvel Family “Flying Marvels” punch out toy from the early 50’s. My most prized posession is the Superman sleeper that both my daugthers have worn when they were younger.

The collection is somewhat arranged by type of media. Hardcovers, graphic novels, and softcovers are sorted by company and character. The figures, toys, statues and PVC sets are on shelves and the walls. Other items, hand made by my daughters, adorn empty places as well as spaces they have picked out. Often a Superman figure is sharing space with a crayon drawing or foil animal. Believe me, I treasure both of them! Organization went out the window years ago. Fortunately, it all fits in my tiny office without infecting the rest of the house.

Since my girls were born 6 years ago, I have stopped adding to it. My two girls joke that this will all belong to them some day – maybe it will…
