Send Us Your Shelf Porn!

Welcome to Send Us Your Shelf Porn and again, no we are not changing the name. We like it. So there.

Anyway, a few weeks ago we featured the growing collection of a devout Batman fan. This week we’re looking at the other end of the DC stable, by way of confessed “Superman fanatic” Paolo Valente.

Just how serious is Paolo’s Kal-El jones? Click on the link to find out …

This is my ongoing Superman collection. I’m from Toronto, Canada and I’ve been a Superman fanatic since birth. My parents gave me a set of Superman PJs complete with cape and I wore them every hour of every day until they were worn out. I’ve been collecting comics since the mid 80s and have the complete Superman V2, Adventures of Superman, Action Comics, Man of Steel, Man of Tomorrow, etc. since that time.

I have been collecting other memorabilia on and off for many years and my most prized collectible is the Topps Superman trading card I had personally signed by Chris Reeve before his accident.

Some of my prized comics in my collection include the first appearances of General Zod, Parasite, the 80 Page giant featuring all the various kryptonites, Superman 233 with the glorious Neal Adams cover, and the first Superman/Flash race.

I have always found Superman to be the most interesting superhero because I feel he is the one who does it for the right reasons. Batman does it out of vengeance, Spiderman does it because of the power/ responsibility thing and the guilt of what happened to Uncle Ben. Superman does it because it’s the right thing to do. His morality and his conviction are so clear cut and unwavering that I find him to be the most compelling superhero. Some will complain that he is too powerful but to them I say SUPER heroes are supposed to be exceptional and unbelievable. Batman is just a top level athlete with kung fu skills. I know kung fu so I’m not terribly impressed. Superman has abilities that take me out of my seat and into fantasy where superheroes are supposed to reign supreme.

I don’t think my collecting will end any time soon because the more I collect the more I am compelled to add to the collection.

For the action figures, I’ve tried to collect all of the DC direct and Mattel figures though many are hard to find and I have many to still purchase. I’ve been trying to find all of the Superman universe related figures from villains to supporting cast.

I recently got a Superman tattoo on my shoulder blade with Kryptonian spelling my name.

I am currently working on a sculpture of Action Comics 1 and am hoping to have that finished by the end of the summer to display as my centerpiece.

I think my collection is more than just shelf porn as it is incorporated into pretty much every aspect of my room / life in some way shape or form. Hope you enjoy it as much as I do!
