Send us your Shelf Porn!

We’ve got a huge treat for you in today’s Shelf Porn, as Justin Leiter from New Jersey shares his massive collection of action figures and comics in today’s edition. Justin sent in around 70 photos of his set-up.

Large or small, we can always use more pictures of people’s collections — and in fact, I think I only have enough right now for a couple more. So please send your pictures and write-ups to jkparkin@yahoo.com.

And now let’s hear from Justin …

*****

Hey folks –

I’m a graphic artist and illustrator, living in New Jersey. I’ve been a comic reader since around five and a collector since age nine. Around that time, back in the mid 70’s, I was given a huge box of old torn-up Silver Age Marvel’s, by a student of my dad’s and that started the ball rolling on the vintage stuff. My mom looked into an Overstreet Price Guide and discovered what the old books were going for and subsequently wrote one of the very first books on collecting comics, called, amazingly enough, ‘Collecting Comic Books!’ The publishing company asked her who they should get to do the cover art, and then she asked me, so I said Michael Golden! Luckily, they were able to get him to do the cover art. You can see that here:

My main collecting interest in comics has always been Silver Age Marvel (though I still dig a lot of DC stuff!), specifically Spider-Man and Fantastic Four, but I’ve also got lots of Daredevil, Conan, Cap and about 10,000 other books! I still buy on average 8-10 books a week.

Back in 1974, my family moved to Japan for a year, where my dad did research on Japanese theater (he writes books on Kabuki) and I was introduced to the INCREDIBLE world of Japanese toys! I feel fortunate that I was actually able to play with those old toys. I had lots of the early Popy stuff, a few of which still survive today, in beat-up form, but I’ve been able to replace some of those old toys with ones in nice shape through Ebay. Growing up, I had lots of Micronauts and Star Wars figures, like a lot of kids in the 70’s; again some of which I still have (all my old SW figures, mainly). Around 1995, I started collecting toys again and it’s been an obsession ever since. I love all kinds of stuff! From statues and busts, to small figures to 12″ ones! I also collect lots of art books, and original art! You can check out my original comic art collection here:

They’re not pictured here, but I’ve also got thousands of CD’s and tapes by tons of rock bands, including loads and loads of demos, live shows, etc! I’m runnin’ out of room!!

Hope you like what you see. Enjoy!

– Justin
