We received an unexpected delivery today at the CBR offices -- the key to an "elite human experience." In the form of an LG smart phone.

In what appears to be a unique piece of viral marketing for the upcoming film "Self/less" -- as sussed out by outlets including ComingSoon.net -- multiple media outlets received a cell phone from "Phoenix Biogenic" today, along with a letter from "Albright," promising that we (the letter was specifically addressed to CBR Executive Producer Jonah Weiland) were one of 200 individuals selected "to experience a revolutionary technological singularity."

"Your wardrobe, your car and your home are all custom designed by the world's finest craftsmen. Your new body will be as well: genetically engineered for perfection and harvested to maturity." (New clothes are nice and all, but not sure why they led with that rather than the genetically engineered perfect body.) The phone itself contained two texts, declaring the device to be the "key to your new future," and that "an elite human experience awaits." The phone also had a missed call; we dialed back and it appeared to be a mechanic shop. Whether or not that's part of the marketing mystery remains to be seen.

Both the phone and the letter stated that further instructions would come via the phone tomorrow, Wednesday, March 4, at 8:30 AM Pacific time; truly testing the integrity of this experiment by asking entertainment journalists to wake up early. We'll be up and at 'em tomorrow morning, and will report back on what life is like as part of the elite human experience. Or possibly we'll have a link to a trailer. Either way, we've got you covered.

"Self/less" is directed by Tarsem Singh, who previously helmed "Immortals" and "The Cell." The film stars Ben Kingsley as a wealthy man stricken by cancer, who swaps bodies with a healthy young man (Ryan Reynolds). It's scheduled for release on July 31, 2015.
