Marvel Studios just confirmed a major link between Secret Invasion and Captain America: The First Avenger's Howling Commandos.

The confirmation comes via a still from the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe series featuring star Olivia Colman, which was recently uploaded to the Walt Disney Studios press portal. This image includes a caption that identifies Colman's character as Special Agent Sonya Falsworth, all but guaranteeing that the Oscar-winning actor is portraying a descendant of the Howling Commandos' James Montgomery Falsworth.

Unconfirmed reports that Colman's role in Secret Invasion was tied to one of Captain America's World War II allies first began doing the rounds in July 2022. These reports, which now appear accurate, indicated that Colman was portraying a gender-swapped version of Brian Falsworth, James Montgomery Falsworth's son in the original comics. There's no word yet on whether Colman will take on the Union Jack name and outfit associated with the Falsworth family in the comics at any point during Secret Invasion, or if she will remain costume and codename-free, just as JJ Feild did as the elder Falsworth in Captain America: The First Avenger.

The Secret Invasion Trailer Infiltrates D23 Expo 2022

Sonya Falsworth is one of two MCU new arrivals featured prominently in the new Secret Invasion trailer, which recently premiered at D23 Expo 2022. Emilia Clarke plays the other, as-yet-unnamed addition to Marvel Studios' shared universe, who warns Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) of an unspecified impending threat and is seen brandishing a gun in several shots. Aside from Fury, the trailer also teases the return of several other MCU mainstays such as Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders), Talos (Ben Mendelsohn), James "Rhodey" Rhodes (Don Cheadle) and Everett K. Ross (Martin Freeman), and highlights Secret Invasion's paranoid atmosphere.

The speculation surrounding Clarke's role in Secret Invasion has only intensified since the trailer's release, with a new report claiming that the English actor is playing a Skrull named G'iah/Gloria Warner. Created by Robbie Thompson and Nico Henrichon for the 2019 limited series Meet the Skrulls, G'iah is a member of the Skrulls' invasion force who has second thoughts about her mission after seeing first-hand how ruthless her people can be. Marvel Studios has yet to officially confirm that Clarke is indeed portraying G'iah, which means this casting news should be treated as a rumor for now.

Secret Invasion is set to arrive on Disney+ in 2023 and will run for six episodes.
