The United Kingdom's ITV has given the go-ahead to The Frankenstein Chronicles, a new period crime drama starring Game of Thrones alum Sean Bean, Deadline reports.

A re-imagining of the classic Frankenstein story, the six-part series is set in 1827 London, where police inspector John Marlott (Bean) happens upon a disturbing body washed up on the shore of the Thames. Marlott discovers the corpse has been assembled from various body parts in a fashion so vile that the inspector gets charged with determining the monstrosity's origin.

"Marlott's investigation takes him into the dark corners of Regency London," creator Benjamin Ross said. "He discovers an underworld of prostitution, drug smuggling, body-snatching and murder for profit. The rational evidence points first one way, and then another as he contemplates a frightening alternate scenario."

Ross co-created Chronicles with writer Barry Langford. The series will be the first original drama to air on ITV's subscription channel, ITV Encore. Production on The Frankenstein Chronicles begins in January in Northern Ireland.
