If you live on the West side of the United States, then good news — your comics retailer should have received their copies of IDW’s excellent Parker: The Hunter book by Darwyn Cooke this week.
If you live out East, well … the news isn’t so good. It’s not terrible, mind you, but you’ll have to wait until next Wednesday to pick up the book.
After seeing some buzz around the internet that some retailers didn’t get their copies, I contacted IDW’s Scott Dunbier, who clarified why part of the country didn’t get it, as well as why Amazon was saying the book wouldn’t ship until August.
JK: I’ve seen some excited reports around the ‘net about retailers and fans receiving their copies of The Hunter this week. I’ve also seen some reports from retailers who didn’t get their copies. What was the reason some retailers didn’t get it this week?
Scott Dunbier: Yes, all the feedback we’ve received so far has been incredibly positive. But, as you point out, some shops didn’t receive the book this week, ones in the Eastern half of the country. The book was held up in customs for a couple of days, which threw distribution for a loop.
JK: Is there an update on when these shops will get their copies?
Scott: Every comic shop should have their copies by next week.
JK: I also noticed it wasn’t on the Diamond shipping list this week. Was that an oversight?
Scott: Really have no idea about that, I assume it has to do with the book coming out over two Wednesdays.
JK: I’ve also heard from a few fans who ordered their copies from Amazon and won’t be getting them until Aug. 10. Any word on what caused that delay?
Scott: We heard that too, and it’s a glitch with Amazon. There are copies available and should be sent out soon.
JK: What are you guys hearing from retailers and fans, in general, about the book? It seems to be getting a lot of praise, from what I can tell.
Scott: My little joke is that we haven’t gotten one good review—they’ve all been raves. So far everyone who has seen the advance book has been very kind in their praise. Darwyn has done something really extraordinary here and I’m very happy people are responding so well to it. But, for all of you who have only seen the ARC (advance reader copy), the final book looks so much better.
JK: Lastly, I understand you’ll have a limited edition version of the book at Comic-Con. What can you tell us about it?
Scott: Yes, we’ll have a signed and numbered version of the book, with a bound-in signature plate, and a different dust jacket. Limited to 500 copies, available at the IDW booth (1705) while they last.
Additionally, Darwyn Cooke will be signing with us two hours each day of the show. Darwyn doesn’t have a space this year so the best place to see him will be at the IDW booth.
My thanks to Scott for getting back to me so quickly. Also, if you’d like to see a side-by-side comparison of the advanced reading copy and the actual book, retailer James Sime took a picture.
