Scarlett Johansson has appeared in nearly 40 films over the past two decades, from "Home Alone 3" and "Ghost World" to "Lost in Translation" and "Lucy," but after some difficulty, she's settled on her favorite role.

"I really like playing Natasha; playing the Black Widow," she told Michigan Avenue. "It's been an interesting journey, to take a character and grow it over these years, and peel the layers back and be able to, as you do in life, grow with this person. It's a character that's really enigmatic and has an amazing origins story, so there's a lot for me to play off of."

Johansson made her debut as Black Widow in 2010's "Iron Man 2," and reprised the role in "Marvel's The Avengers," "Captain America: The Winter Soldier," "Avengers: Age of Ultron" and "Captain America: Civil War." She'll return as the super-spy in the two-part "Avengers: Infinity War."

Her performances as Black Widow have helped to establish Johansson as the highest-grossing actress of all time

Addressing the popularity of the character, the actress said, "People like the puzzle pieces. It's part of the fun of the Marvel franchise. They like to see these little pieces come together, and [discover] little references that they knew from the comics and stuff, so it's fun. I like that."

Johansson will next be seen in the U.S. adaptation of "Ghost in the Shell," filming now.
