Captain America and Black Widow aren't the likeliest of partners on the surface, but once fans dig deeper through Captain America: The Winter Soldier, the alliance will make all the sense in the world, according to Scarlett Johansson.

"It does make sense," she told Coming Soon. "The pairing is strange on paper, but you'll understand the pairing when you see 'Cap 2.'"

Johansson's answer came after she was asked about developing her on-screen relationship with Chris Evans in Joss Whedon's The Avengers. She credits the director for laying "the groundwork for a lot of interesting connections" between the Avengers characters, including between Cap and Widow.

"That's why the audiences are so intrigued by that film because they love to see how these characters react to each other that come from completely different universes," she said. "[Marvel] will continue to build on the different relationships that audiences connect to."

Captain America: The Winter Soldier arrives on April 4, 2014.
