Following a not-so-subtle tease on Monday, it was officially announced this morning that four-time Grammy winner Sam Smith recorded the theme song for "Spectre."

Written by Smith and Jimmy Napes, the track "Writing's on the Wall" marks the first time since 1965's "Thunderball" that the James Bond theme song has been performed by a British male solo artist. The song will debut Sept. 25.

"This is one of the highlights of my career," Smith wrote. "I am honoured to finally announce that I will be singing the next Bond theme song. I am so excited to be a part of this iconic British legacy and join an incredible line up of some of my biggest musical inspirations. I hope you all enjoy the song as much as I enjoyed making it."

In director Sam Mendes' "Spectre," a message from Bond’s past sends him on a trail to uncover a sinister organization. While M battles political forces to keep the secret service alive, Bond peels back the layers of deceit to reveal the terrible truth behind Spectre.

Opening Nov. 6, “Spectre” stars Daniel Craig, Ralph Fiennes, Ben Whishaw, Naomie Harris, Rory Kinnear, Christoph Waltz, Monica Bellucci, David Bautista and Andrew Scott.
