According to The Hollywood Reporter, brothers Anthony and Joe Russo are in final negotiations to direct “Captain America 2” for Marvel Studios. Best known for their work directing “You, Me and Dupree” and over 30 episodes of NBC’s critically acclaimed “Community,” the Russo brothers were initially rumored to be on the short list of candidates in late March when an insider told Vulture that Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige is a “vibe guy” who “likes to see if he gets along with people before he’ll decide about spending the next two years with them.” According to the insider, the Russos “hit it off with Kevin in the room.” The brothers’ chances improved when F. Gary Gray withdrew his name from consideration less than two weeks later.
The move certainly continues Marvel Studios’ track record of finding unorthodox directors for their films, initially hiring “Monster” director Patty Jenkins for “Thor 2” and after Jenkins’ departure, tapped “Game of Thrones” director Alan Taylor. Considering the Russo brothers’ comedic background, they would certainly bring a unique perspective to “Captain America 2.”
