Earlier this week, a rumor surfaced that Marvel Television was quietly developing a series starring Captain Britain. However, it turns out that the tweets and image fueling the speculation were instead teasing a show being developed with the intention of pitching it to Marvel.

The speculation that Brian Braddock, a hero originally created for the Marvel UK line of comics in the '70s that became a player in the X-Men line in the '80s and '90s, would arrive on TV sets in 2017 began following a series tweets from poster artist Ciara McAvoy. The artist tweeted that she's working on the poster for a "Captain Britain" TV series.

For my 1000th Tweet: Who will be playing Brian Braddock in the upcoming tv series #CaptainBritain?#Marvel Stay tune! pic.twitter.com/e0gbXKjdav- Ciara McAvoy (@CiaraMcAvoy1) March 19, 2016

She followed up that tweet with this one:

I can't reveal anything yet but hopefully I'll be able to soon. Waiting for the go ahead from the co-producer- Ciara McAvoy (@CiaraMcAvoy1) March 22, 2016

She also named a few producers attached to the project.

Something to start with : The producer Chris - @mrcoolmintprod

and the co producer Eleni - @MOVIESEL5 #CaptainBritain- Ciara McAvoy (@CiaraMcAvoy1) March 23, 2016

Since Marvel is notoriously tight-lipped about upcoming projects, it seemed incredibly unprecedented for a poster designer to be allowed to announce a potentially major, official Marvel project. One of the producers McAvoy named, Chris Lark, has clarified the status of the project via Twitter, writing in a series of tweets:

Ladies & Gentlemen I'm here to confirm that I and my co-prod Eleni Larchanidou are working on a Highlight Reel for a TV series based on the Marvel Comics character #CaptainBritain for 2017. Right now we are in very early stages of development for this idea and working on things like the budget for this Reel to take to Marvel for 2017 with hopes of them helping us with the series. Thank you so much for your interest in #CaptainBritain and expect more news later this year and early in 2017. Thanks so much also to @CiaraMcAvoy1 for her help with this series project too.

So the "Captain Britain" TV series is actually a highlight reel being assembled by producers, independent of Marvel, in hopes that Marvel will help them bring the series to television next year.
