Rumor: New ‘Star Wars’ Films Will Integrate With Cartoons, Novels, Comics

by  in Movie News Comment

Each day seems to bring a new Star Wars rumor, from plot details to actors’ roles to Stormtrooper designs, but this might be the most intriguing — a certainly furthest-reaching — one yet.

According to Badass Digest’s Devin Faraci, an anonymous Lucasfilm employee contends that, with the upcoming films, “We’re going to redefine longform storytelling.” A bold boast, certainly, but what does it mean?

For starters, the new trilogy is being plotted out in advance, rather than it being treated like a relay race, with J.J. Abrams and Lawrence Kasden handing off plot threads to Rian Johnson, and so on. It’s a first for the franchise.

More importantly, however, Faraci reports the over-arching story will reach beyond the core movies, weaving through cartoons (at the moment, just Star Wars Rebels), novels and comic books — in his words, “making every piece of side story count.” While audiences won’t have to read every book or watch every animated episode  into order to follow the films, they’ll apparently be rewarded if they do.

That interconnection might add credence to the recent rumor that the Empire’s Jedi-hunting Inquisitors introduced in Star Wars Rebels will play a central role in Episode VII.

Formerly an admitted skeptic of the new trilogy, Faraci says he’s been won over by this new information. His full report is worth reading.
