With the release of “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” speeding toward us faster than an X-wing fighter flying toward a small thermal exhaust port, the film’s cast and director appeared Friday on “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” where they debuted not one but two new clips.
The first shows Bodhi Rook (Riz Ahmed), Cassian Sandor (Diego Luna) and K-2SO (Alan Tudyk) flying fast and low in what appears to be a U-wing troop transpt on an undercover mission in a howling storm.
The second, which starts at about 3:18, depicts the rescue by Rebel fighters of Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones) from what’s presumably an Imperial prison transport. However, Jyn’s plans don’t quite match up with those of the Rebel Alliance, so she makes a break for it — only to be stopped cold by K-2SO.
Jones, Luna, Ahmed and Tudyk appear alongside co-stars Donnie Yen, Ben Mendelssohn and Mads Mikkelsen in the “Jimmy Kimmel” segments, in which Ahmed describes the awkward moment at the end of the cast screening at Skywalker Ranch when producer Kathleen Kennedy and director Gareth Edwards turned to the stars to get their immediate reaction and were faced with a blank silence. Fortunately, Ahmed was soon able to convey he did indeed think the film was “good” — a classic case of understatement.
In addition, there’s the unforgettable image Tudyk conjures of water hoses being shoved down the throats of various Mon Calamari as the crew attempted to keep the actors playing the aliens cool inside their thick latex masks.
“Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” opens Dec. 15 in the United Kingdom and Dec. 16 in the United States.
