The footage opens with the iconic final moments of the Battle of Yavin, and the destruction of the first Death Star, before speeding in reverse, past the daydreams of a farm boy on Tatooine, past the desperate actions of a determined princess, and past fight after fight, to Jyn Erso, Mon Mothma and the words that set the Rebellion on the path to take down the Empire's superweapon: "We've a mission for you."

It's an undeniably effective promo that should get old and new "Star Wars" fans alike primed for today's nationwide U.S. premiere.

Directed by Gareth Edwards ("Monsters," "Godzilla"), the film follows a ragtag group of freedom fighters who undertake the dangerous mission to steal the plans for the Galactic Empire's planet-destroying new superweapon, the Death Star.
