"Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" has been in theaters for just two weeks, but it's already conquering the box office. According to Variety, the latest "Star Wars" film is currently sitting pretty as the third-highest grossing film in the United States.

As of today, the film has grossed a whopping $16.6 million in the U.S. alone; overseas, it has accumulated $687.7m. That pushes it past the year's other big blockbuster films, including “The Secret Life of Pets” ($368m), “The Jungle Book” ($364m) and “Deadpool” ($363m). "Rogue One" has settled into third place behind “Finding Dory” ($486m) and “Captain America: Civil War” ($408m), two of Disney's other popular franchises.

In addition to being the third-highest grossing film of the year, "Rogue One" currently ranks as the 29th-highest earner of all time at domestic box office and is the tenth-highest grossing film of 2016 worldwide. However, the film has plenty of time to climb up the list, since it has a good amount of time left at the box office. What's more, "Rogue One" won't release in China for another week; this is sure to give the film a tidy boost when it opens. "Rogue One" has already grossed $57m in the UK, $31.1m in Germany, $26.7m in France, $24.5m in Australia and $20.2m in Japan.

"Rogue One" is Disney's first "Star Wars" anthology film. That is to say, the film is part of the larger "Star Wars" universe, if not necessarily part of the main "Star Wars" trilogies like "Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens." "Rogue One" follows the band of Rebels who track down and steal the plans to the Death Star, which kicks off the original trilogy that beings with "A New Hope" and enables Luke Skywalker to destroy the Death Star. Unlike previous "Star Wars" films, "Rogue One" was not set up as a franchise; the story begins and ends with the events of the film.

Directed by Gareth Edwards from a script by Gary Whitta and Chris Weitz, “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” stars Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, Ben Mendelsohn, Donnie Yen, Mads Mikkelsen, Alan Tudyk, Jiang Wen and Forest Whitaker and is now in theaters. "Star Wars: Episode VIII," the next main "Star Wars" film, arrives in theaters on December 15, 2017.
