Nearly four months after Jimmy Smits reluctantly confirmed that he has a “small part” in “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” we finally have an official look at the actor reprising his role as Bail Organa.
The image, which originates in the latest issue of Us Weekly, depicts the former viceroy of Alderaan and Galactic Senator in decidedly less regal garb than he wore in 2002’s “Star Wars: Attack of the Clones” and 2005’s “Revenge of the Sith.” As Smits explains in the photo’s caption, the less “stately” clothing reflects that Organa “isn’t as high up on the political food chain” in the new film.

Smits, known for his roles on “L.A. Law,” “NYPD Blue” and “The West Wing,” was pressed in August to admit that, yes, he has a cameo in “Rogue One” after eagle-eyed fans picked him out in a shot from the film’s “Star Wars” Celebration sizzle reel. Although he was mostly obscured by a camera, it was enough for franchise devotees to call him out.
The adoptive father of Princess Leia, Bail Organa was one of the founders of the Rebel Alliance; he was killed when the Death Star destroyed Alderaan in 1977’s “Star Wars.”
Directed by Gareth Edwards, “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” is set just before the events of that film, as a band of unlikely Rebels undertakes a dangerous mission to steal the plans for the Empire’s new superweapon. Opening Dec. 15 in the United Kingdom and Dec. 16 in the United States, the film stars Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, Ben Mendelsohn, Donnie Yen, Mads Mikkelsen, Alan Tudyk, Jiang Wen and Forest Whitaker.
