Rogue One Director Actually Stole the Death Star Plans

Forget Jyn Erso and her ragtag group of freedom fighters, it turns out the fate of the Rebel Alliance — and the galaxy — may fall on Gareth Edwards.

“I stole the Death Star plans,” the director of “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” sheepishly admitted during a Facebook Q&A with the film’s cast.

“There was only one thing I wanted the whole shoot,” Edwards said when asked if he made off with any pieces from the set, “and the entire time I kept whispering to people, like, ‘Where do you keep that? Where will it be at the end? How do I get a whole of it? Can I have it?’ And they were like ‘No, this is going to be archived. This is a part of film history.'”

“So I obviously didn’t do this because then they’ll want it back,” the filmmaker added before finally admitting to absconding with the prop schematic of the Empire’s new superweapon — essentially, the key to “Rogue One,” not to mention 1977’s “Star Wars.”

The moderator and cast were quick to point out that the assembled crew will undoubtedly steal back the plans. However, Edwards probably has an even bigger concern: the Lucasfilm archivists.

Opening Dec. 15 in the United Kingdom and Dec. 16 in the United States, “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” stars Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, Ben Mendelsohn, Donnie Yen, Mads Mikkelsen, Alan Tudyk, Jiang Wen and Forest Whitaker.
