Robert Rodriguez Joins Live-Action “Jonny Quest” Film

Warner Bros.’ long-dormant “Jonny Quest” live-action feature film adaptation appears to be active once again, with word from The Hollywood Reporter that Robert Rodriguez has joined the project, as director and co-writer, sharing the latter duties with Terry Rossio.

Though Rodriguez is known for crime and horror fare like “From Dusk till Dawn,” “Sin City” and “Machete,” he also has a long track record of family-friendly fare, including the four “Spy Kids” films and “The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl in 3-D” — making him a likely fit for “Jonny Quest,” starring a young boy on globetrotting adventures with his scientist father, bodyguard Race Bannon and friend Hadji.

Rodriguez and Rossio will rewrite a previous script by Dan Mazeau. Rossio’s credits include “The Mask of Zorro,” “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” and “The Lone Ranger.” Dan Lin and Adrian Askarieh will produce for Warner Bros.

“Jonny Quest” ran for just one season between 1964 and 1965, but stands as an influential — and still fondly remembered — animated adventure series, with many nostalgia-fueled revivals, including multiple comic book series. In the 1990s, “Superman” director Richard Donner was attached to a film adaptation; reports connected Zac Efron to the tile role back in 2009.
