Robert Kirkman has made his next creator-owned comic book series official -- and this time, he's taking on the sci-fi genre alongside artist Lorenzo De Felici, in Image Comics and Skybound's Oblivion Song.

Oblivion Song is scheduled to debut in March and stars an agent named Nathan Cole, who retrieves people who have been left behind in an alternate dimension named Oblivion. According to Skybound, it falls tonally somewhere between Kirkman's famous creations The Walking Dead and Invincible, with The Walking Dead representing the more bleak and depressing end of the spectrum, and Invincible being more fun and hopeful (at times, at least).

Here's the official synopsis of the series:

A decade ago 300,000 citizens of Philadelphia were suddenly lost in Oblivion. The government made every attempt to recover them but after many years they gave up. Nathan Cole... won't. He makes daily trips, risking his life to try and rescue those lost, alone and afraid, living in the apocalyptic hellscape of Oblivion. But maybe... Nathan is looking for something else? Why can't he resist the siren call of the Oblivion Song?

Oblivion Song is Robert Kirkman's first new comic book series since Outcast by Kirkman & Azaceta, written by Kirkman and illustrated by Paul Azaceta. That book debuted in 2014 at Kirkman's Image Comics partner studio Skybound and was in development as a television series before the first issue was released -- the Outcast show debuted on Cinemax in June 2016.

While no Hollywood deal has been announced for Oblivion Song, one seems nearly inevitable given Kirkman's track record. As the creator of The Walking Dead franchise, the show's success in television, video games and merchandise has set a new standard for the potential and sustained success of creator-owned comics adapted to other media. Invincible is currently in development as a feature film from Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg at Universal Pictures, and Thief of Thieves has been in development as a TV series at AMC (the network home of The Walking Dead), though it's been a few years since there was news on that front.

Oblivion Song will be De Felici's first interior work for an American comic book series; his cover art has been seen on multiple Sybound titles including The Walking Dead, Redneck, Invincible, Kill the Minotaur, Manifest Destiny and Birthright. Kirkman and De Felici will be joined on the series by colorist Annalisa Leoni, letterer Rus Wooton and editor Sean Mackiewicz, Skybound's Senior Vice President, Editor in Chief.

Kirkman and De Felici are said to have been working on the series for more than a year, and multiple issues are already completed. Oblivion Song #1 is scheduled for release on March 7, 2018.

Kirkman is slated to appear at noon today at a panel as part of New York Comic Con and will surely discuss this new series. Keep reading CBR for more on Kirkman and Oblivion Song.
