Rob Zombie has been saved from the remake factory by the men behind Paranormal Activity, and it’s all because they offered him the chance to make the movie he wanted for once.
Zombie has ditched plans to remake The Blob in favor of an all-original concept, The Lords of Salem, to be co-produced by Haunted Films, the production company created by Paranormal creators Jason Blum, Steven Schneider and Oren Peli. The former musician explained that, for him, the decider was the freedom he was offered:
What excited me most was Jason saying, you can have total control over the script, casting and final cut. I said I’m in… I’ve had differing levels of control, with the best experience being Lionsgate on The Devil’s Rejects, when I made the movie and they said, `great.’ The two Halloween movies were more give and take, and I had enough bloody battles to get my way that by the time I got it, I didn’t care anymore.
Salem, he says, will be a more “patient” movie about the return of a coven of witches to contemporary Salem, MA. Zombie plans to write the movie while on tour, and shoot it next year.
