If a bit of leaked footage is to be believed, The CW’s hit drama Riverdale looks to be further embracing the storied history of its comic book roots when it returns for a second season.
An audition tape has surfaced featuring actress Lorelei Linklater (Boyhood) in what looks to be her bid to join the show’s second season as Toni Topaz, a character that fans of Archie Comics will surely recognize following her debut in Jughead Double Digest #176 back in 2012. Bearing her signature striking pink hair and purple attire, Topaz is a bisexual black character whose inclusion would make sense given the network’s dedication to diversifying their lineup to appeal to modern audiences.
The most notable instance of this came during Supergirl Season 2, when one of its primary subplots consisted of Alex Danvers (Chyler Leigh) dealing with the acceptance of her own homosexuality. Bringing a strong bisexual female character into the fold on Riverdale could continue the CW’s approach of appealing to a demographic that isn’t portrayed very often on television network series.
Returning Wednesdays at 8 p.m. ET/PT this fall on The CW, Riverdale stars K.J. Apa as Archie Andrews, Lili Reinhart as Betty Cooper, Camila Mendes as Veronica Lodge, Cole Sprouse as Jughead Jones, Madelaine Petsch as Cheryl Blossom, Ashleigh Murray as Josie McCoy and Casey Cott as Kevin Keller.
