The new season of Riverdale will pick up right where the story left off. “Chapter Fourteen: A Kiss Before Dying,” the season premiere of Riverdale Season 2, will explore the aftermath of the Season 1 finale, where Fred Andrews was shot in front of his son Archie at Pop Tate's diner.

According to the episode synopsis,

THE ANGEL OF DEATH — As Fred’s (Luke Perry) life hangs in the balance following the shooting at Pop’s diner, Archie (KJ Apa) struggles with the emotional aftermath of what he witnessed. Meanwhile, as Veronica (Camila Mendes) steps out of her comfort zone to support Archie, she learns that her father Hiram (Mark Consuelos) has arrived to Riverdale earlier than expected. Elsewhere, at Pop’s diner, Pop Tate (guest star Alvin Sanders) recounts the chilling details of the shooting, which leaves Jughead (Cole Sprouse) and Betty (Lili Reinhart) questioning the gunman’s true motives. Lastly, after running into Cheryl (Madelaine Petsch) at the hospital, Betty and Kevin (Casey Cott) are surprised to learn about the fire at Thornhill. Rob Seidenglanz directed the episode written by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa (#201.) Original airdate 10/11/2017.

Last May, "Chapter Thirteen: The Sweet Hereafter" resolved Season 1's ongoing mystery: Jason Blossom's murder. In the wake of the terrible truth that her father ran a drug empire and had murdered her brother over it, Cheryl tried to kill herself and then, after she was rescued by Archie and his friends, successfully torched the Blossom mansion. Per the synopsis for “Chapter Fourteen: A Kiss Before Dying,” this will be a major plot point in the Season 2 premiere.

Additionally, Fred was critically injured in a shooting at Pop Tate's during the Season 1 finale's final moments. However, the synopsis for the Season 2 premiere suggests the shooting wasn't so random after all. Fred runs one of the only clean businesses in Riverdale, at least as Hermione Lodge would tell it. As such, he could have made an enemy of his competitors. What's more, he had an affair with Hermione while her shady businessman husband Hiram was in prison; if word got back to Hiram, there's no telling what he would do to get revenge.

Returning October 11 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on the CW, Riverdale stars K.J. Apa as Archie Andrews, Lili Reinhart as Betty Cooper, Camila Mendes as Veronica Lodge, Cole Sprouse as Jughead Jones, Madelaine Petsch as Cheryl Blossom, Ashleigh Murray as Josie McCoy and Casey Cott as Kevin Keller.
