Ricky Gervais, fresh off his hilarious turn as host of the Golden Globe Awards, will reprise his role as David Brent, if only briefly, in next week’s episode of NBC’s The Office, Vulture reports.
Confirmation of the cameo, from show-runner Paul Lieberstein (aka Toby Flenderson), follows more than a year of rumors, and a couple of flat-out denials. Gervais will appear in the cold open of the Jan. 27 episode, in “a little nod” to star Steve Carell, who’s leaving the sitcom in the spring.
“It’s a little more than if you blink, you’ll miss it, but if you don’t set your TiVo right, you’ll miss it,” Lieberstein tells Vulture.
Gervais, who created the original U.K. version of The Office with frequent collaborator Stephen Merchant, starred as the delusional and inept general manager of the Slough branch of Wernham-Hogg from 2001 to 2003. The two are producers of the U.S. Office, and co-wrote the third-season episode “The Convict.”
