The West Wing alum Richard Schiff has joined director Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel, Variety reports. He’ll play “Dr. Hamilton,” most likely a version of the DC Comics character Prof. Emil Hamilton.
Introduced in January 1987’s The Adventures of Superman #424, Hamilton was a former employee of S.T.A.R. Labs and the U.S. government who was driven insane after Lex Luthor bought up, and then took credit for, his inventions. Upon his release from a mental-health facility, he became Superman’s scientific adviser. More recently the again-insane Hamilton was revealed to be the villain Ruin, who was targeting Clark Kent’s loved ones under the belief that Superman was sapping the sun of its energy.
The character has also appeared several times on television, in episodes of Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, Superman: The Animated Series, Justice League Unlimited and Smallville.
Schiff, who won an Emmy Award for his performance as Toby Ziegler on The West Wing, has a recurring role on the new Showtime comedy House of Lies, and will appear as King Leopold on ABC’s Once Upon a Time.
Written by David S. Goyer from a story by Goyer and Christopher Nolan, Man of Steel stars Henry Cavill as Superman, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Michael Shannon as General Zod, Diane Lane as Martha Kent, Kevin Costner as Jonathan Kent, Russell Crowe as Jor-El, Ayelet Zurer as Lara Lor-Van, Laurence Fishburne as Perry White, Antje Traue as Faora, Harry Lennix as General Swanwick and Christopher Meloni as Col. Hardy. The film opens June 14, 2013.
