Fox has reportedly registered a title for "Wolverine 3," and it's likely not what fans expected after months of speculation. According to X-MenFilms.com, the next and final "Wolverine" film will be titled "Wolverine: Weapon X."

So far, not much has been revealed about "Wolverine 3," except that it will be R-rated, set in the future and have a Western feel. As such, rumors posited that the film will adapt Mark Millar and Steve McNiven's "Old Man Logan" storyline, with the mutant-hating Donald Pierce and his cyborg assassins the Reavers as the villains. However, even if this rumored title pans out, it's possible the film would still draw some influences from the "Old Man Logan" storyline.

Wolverine appeared briefly as Weapon X in "X-Men: Apocalypse," the latest film in the X-Men Cinematic Universe. Though his role was only a cameo, it carried some weighty implications that suggest -- and are possibly supported by the "X-Men: Apocalypse" post-credits scene -- that X-23 will be making her live-action debut in "Wolverine 3." The Wolverine clone first appeared on the "X-Men: Evolution" animated series, before becoming a major player in the comics. Currently, X-23 carries the mantle of Wolverine in her own series from Marvel Comics. The "Weapon X" title could also refer to X-23's connection to Wolverine, in that she is his clone.

Directed by James Mangold and starring Hugh Jackman, Eriq la Salle, Stephen Merchant Boyd Holbrook, and Elise Neal, "Wolverine 3" opens on March 3, 2017.
