A new report suggests that the remake of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic isn't the only game based on the classic role-playing franchise currently in development.

According to reputable Star Wars insider Bespin Bulletin, speaking on BOB the Podcast, another game based on Knights of the Old Republic is currently being produced by an unknown studio. The leaker confirmed that Bioware, the developer behind the original game, isn't involved and the project is separate from the recently-announced remake Aspyr is now working on. "Amongst my digging, I heard there is a Knights of the Old Republic project in development somewhere," said Bespin Bulletin. "I talked to a couple of people and I also found out that Jason Schreier said that it’s not with EA and we’ll ‘never guess’ who the studio is that’s making this game."

At the time of writing, no studio or publisher has announced a new Knights of the Old Republic game. If Bespin Bulletin is correct, it's possible that Lucasfilm Games is working with a publisher that doesn't have a history with the Star Wars license. Electronic Arts used to hold the exclusive rights to video games set in a galaxy far, far away but the contract was eventually revoked, opening the flood gates for smaller developers.

Fans of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic are in luck as if the report turns out to be false, they can still look forward to the remake of the original game. Built from the ground up, this modern take on the iconic RPG may feature several tweaked mechanics and systems. It's rumored that the game will feature action-based combat inspired by God of War and Nioh, but will allow players to switch to the original system. It's currently unknown whether this mode will resemble Bioware's game or something similar to the slow-down options featured in Dragon Age: Inquisition and Final Fantasy VII.

Beyond the potential new entry in the Knights of the Old Republic franchise, there are several other major Star Wars games on the horizon. LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga finally arrives, after several years of delays, on April 5 while the sequel to Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is expected to be announced before or during E3 2022. Quantic Dream, a studio currently embroiled in a high-profile harassment investigation, is also developing Star Wars: Eclipse which may only ship in 2026 due to production issues.
