Along with the news of the addition of Pom Klementieff to the cast of "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2," insiders have claimed that Academy Award-winner Matthew McConaughey declined an invitation to sign up as well.

Variety's report on the Klementieff casting includes a line saying that McConaughey "recently passed" on playing the film's unidentified villain, thus "leaving the search for that part still in progress." The sources also say that both Marvel and writer/director James Gunn wanted to get McConaughey in on the "Guardians" action.

This isn't the first time McConaughey has been linked to a superhero property. A previous rumor linked the actor to "Spider-Man," with Marvel reportedly eying the actor to play Norman Osborn. Nothing has come of that rumor since it initially surfaced way back in May, however. Additionally, McConaughey admitted to Variety back in May that he would not be opposed to starring in a big action movie.

"I've read some Marvel and DC scripts and I've talked about working with them on some scripts, none of which I'll share with with you what they are - or were," said McConaughey earlier this year. "Yeah, I've circled some of those. Nothing has been right for me yet. But I'm sure open to it."

Directed by James Gunn and starring Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana and Dave Bautista, "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" opens on May 5, 2017.
