Following the reveal yesterday of the third solo Wolverine film’s title, we now have more potentially accurate information about the upcoming mutant movie. Some “Logan” plot points have been given to The Wrap’s Umberto Gonzalez by an unnamed source, targeting everything from Logan’s health to the film’s setting to a possible major film debut.
“Logan” will be the darkest X-Men film to date. Hugh Jackman’s latest look owes a lot to the “Old Man Logan” storyline. He doesn’t look healthy, drinks heavily and drives a limo for work. Logan’s healing factor will also have diminished with his old age. This fits in with what was revealed on the script page that director James Mangold shared:
As for our hero, well, he’s older now and it’s clear his abilities aren’t what they once were. He’s fading on the inside and his diminished healing factor keeps him in a constant state of chronic pain — hence booze as a painkiller.
Additionally, the information targets the child’s hand glimpsed on the teaser poster: apparently, that hand belongs to a young mutant girl that was turned into a “killing machine” by a government operation called Transigen. And yes — that little girl is X-23. While she’s not called X-23 or Laura Kinney by name, The Wrap states that she will have “two claws instead of three,” which — when combined with the proposed origin story — seems to make her Laura Kinney, or at least a Laura Kinney analogue. There’s been no confirmation by Fox yet that this character is named X-23, but all the details are in place.
This character also seems like X-23 because she’s been rumored to be a part of the film for a while now. The post-credits scene in “X-Men: Apocalypse” even teased Laura’s involvement by having a mysterious corporation take a vial of Wolverine’s blood, possibly for cloning purposes.
The Wrap also claims that Xavier’s powers will be unstable and he’s generally unwell. At times he doesn’t even remember who Logan is. And Stephen Merchant will be playing the albino mutant-tracking mutant Caliban — a role that was filled by Tómas Lemarquis in “X-Men: Apocalypse.”
Directed by James Mangold and starring Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart, Boyd Holbrook, Richard E. Grant and Stephen Merchant, “Logan” arrives in theaters on March 3, 2017.
