Following "Fantastic Four's" disappointing performance at the box office in August, the likelihood of a sequel happening was called into question. "Fantastic Four 2" had a June 2, 2017 release date scheduled before the film flopped, leaving many to wonder what the follow-up's fate would be.

According to a report from Box Office, posted to Twitter, the "FF" sequel has been removed from Fox's release schedule.

CBR News has reached out to Fox for confirmation on the scheduling change.

Reports of "Fantastic Four 2" being pulled date back to August, to the Monday following the first film's underwhelming opening weekend. That rumor was quickly followed by a statement from Fox via domestic distribution chief Chris Aronson saying that Fox "remains committed to these characters and we have a lot to look forward to in our Marvel universe."

Writer/producer Simon Kinberg also stated in September that he was "really focused on the next one." He continued to say that he "was obviously disappointed. I was most disappointed that fans didn't like ['Fantastic Four']. I care more about them than I do anyone else. But I haven't done a full deep dive on it. Do I think it was unfairly treated? I don't know... We're figuring out what [a 'Fantastic Four' sequel] would be. I'd like that to happen."
