Remender and Boschi Team For “Winter Soldier: The Bitter March”

The Winter Soldier is coming to big screens this spring with “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” but before that, the character will star in a new Marvel Comics miniseries titled “Winter Soldier: The Bitter March,” first revealed Tuesday by USA Today.

The five-issue, February-debuting series will be written by current “Captain America” scribe Rick Remender, and illustrated by his “Punisher: In The Blood” collaborator Roland Boschi. It’s set in 1966, during the former sidekick’s time as a brainwashed Soviet assassin, and sees S.H.I.E.L.D. and the Soviets vying for a secret Nazi formula under Hydra control.

Remender told USA Today the miniseries will have repercussions on the “Captain America” ongoing series, while being a love letter to James Bond and Jim Steranko era S.H.I.E.L.D. stories.

“He was a tool who had very little control of his own mind, but I will be exploring how Bucky Barnes is underneath all of it still,” Remender is quoted. “Even back then, there was a piece of him trying to stand back up.”

The Winter Soldier will also guest star in the upcoming, Remender-written, “Captain America” #13, on sale Nov. 6. Marvel Studios‘ “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” feature film, based heavily on the work of Ed Brubaker and Steve Epting, is scheduled to be released on April 4, 2014.
