In this series we spotlight comic book stories that are likely best left forgotten. Here is an archive of past installments.

Today, we take a look at one of the characters introduced during DC's Bloodlines event, the rather ill-thought out Jamm, who traveled to the 31st Century from the 20th Century to...use his powers to make women take their clothes off for him...

Legion of Super-Heroes Annual #4 came out at the very tail end of Tom and Mary Bierbaums' tenure as the writer of Legion of Superheroes. Their run was finished up in about another month or two after this issue came out. So when tasked with introducing a brand new character who they likely would never get a chance to actually write for DC Comics, I suspect that they were not exactly jumping for joy. Or maybe they were. Either way, their entry for the "Create a new character" Bloodlines event was very much a one-off joke character.

Jamm was a 20th Century skateboarder who is attacked by the parasitic aliens of Bloodlines when Timber Wolf, the Legionnaire who had been stuck in the past, tries to rescue Jamm. A time travel error (as the Time Institute is under attack by dead people risen from the grave during a Legion storyline that was going on at the same time) brought Jamm, the alien and Timber Wolf to the future.

While there, Jamm demonstrates the metahuman power he received courtesy of the attack by the alien (the aliens wake up the metagene in people with metagenes). He can make people do whatever he wants them to do. He makes the alien go back to the past and then he passes out. When he wakes up, he puts his power into effect on the Legionnaires (or former Legionnaires/Substitute Legionnaires, etc.) at hand...

He then decides to go partying in the future, and decides to make Night Girl (Cosmic Boy's wife) come with him, leaving her baby behind...

and, of course, making her take her clothes off...

By the way, we don't know for sure that he didn't do anything else off-panel, but it doesn't SEEM like he did. Still, that that's even a possibility is pretty sketchy.

He asks Night Girl to help him get the most powerful guy she knows as their bodyguard, so she takes him to Lar Gand...

And this introduces him to Lar Gand's girlfriend, Shadow Lass, who he then, well, you know...

Go to the next page to see what happens next...

Throughout the comic, Lar Gand tries to reason with Jamm, to make him become a hero...

While off with Shadow Lass, Jamm has her use her powers on him and it freaks him out so much that he bans her from using her powers again.

Later on, Lar Gand tries again to reason with Jamm...

This puts them into a situation where they're going to die unless Shadow Lass uses her powers. So he releases her from her power restriction and she saves the day.

They then decide to send Jamm back to the past, and just hope that he uses his powers correctly, on the sole compelling thing being that Shadow Lass will punish him if he acts out...

That is one weird ass story. Jamm never really learns how to be a hero. He's just scared of Shadow Lass. But how do they really know that he won't just go right back to making young women get naked for him? They really don't. It's essentially just, "Eh, let him be someone else's problem." And while the comic certainly doesn't say what Jamm is doing is a GOOD thing, it also plays it totally for laughs. You know, sort of like "boys will be boys!" It's a weird, weird comic book.
