‘RED’ Director to Helm ‘Divergent’ Sequel

Rebounding from the box-office bomb that was R.I.P.D., director Robert Schwentke has been tapped by Summit Entertainment to helm Insurgent, the sequel to the upcoming sci-fi adventure Divergent.

Neil Burger, who directed the first film in the planned trilogy, had already said he wouldn’t return for the second installment.

“We are excited to announce that we have found the perfect director to carry on the story of Tris Prior and the expanded world of Insurgent in Robert Schwentke,” Erik Feig, Lionsgate’s president of production, said in a statement. “Robert, with whom we have already had a successful relationship, has proven a master storyteller in multiple genres and we can’t wait to see what he brings to Veronica Roth’s next installment of the Divergent series.”

Schwentke directed Summit’s hit 2010 action-comedy RED, but opted not to helm the follow-up.

Based on the young-adult novel by Veronica Roth, Divergent is set in a dystopian post-apocalyptic version of Chicago where people are divided into five factions based on their personalities, the film stars Shailene Woodley as Beatrice “Tris” Prior, a teenager who’s warned that she’s Divergent, meaning she doesn’t belong to any one group. Soon she discovers a plot to destroy all Divergents, and must discover what makes her kind so dangerous — before it’s too late.

Insurgent is scheduled to debut on March 20, 2015.
