Ramona and Beezus Writer To Adapt YA Fantasy Firelight

Mandalay Pictures has hired Ramona and Beezus screenwriter Nick Pustay to adapt Sophie Jordan’s young-adult fantasy novel Firelight, Heat Vision reports.

Referred to by Heat Vision and others as “Twilight with dragons” — isn’t every other YA novel described as “Twilight with _____”? — Firelight centers on the fire-breathing Jacinda, a young member of the “draki,” descendants of dragons who can morph into human form. After fleeing with her family into the mortal world, Jacinda puts their lives in danger when she falls in love with Will, who secretly comes from a line of dragon hunters.

Mandalay picked up the film rights just weeks after the book, the first in a planned series, was published in September by Harper Teen. Cathy Schulman is producing.

Pustay is also writing the screenplay for Shiver, an adaptation of Maggie Stiefvater’s supernatural romance about a teen boy who becomes a wolf each winter and the girlfriend who helps him find the secret to remaining human.
