How Well Do You Know Stan Lee?

In a comics industry filled with legendary creators, there’s no one that can compare with Stan Lee. As recognizable to the general public as many of Marvel’s biggest heroes, he’s a legendary figure that has been instrumental in shaping the fortunes of the American comics field. Starting to work for Marvel (then Timely comics) in 1940, Stan stayed with the company through good times and bad, gradually taking on more responsibilities and more of the writing and editing duties, until he was helping produce the lion’s share of Marvel’s output. Westerns, Romance, Monster Stories, Horror — you name it, Stan wrote it.

But Stan’s enduring popularity truly stems from his pivotal role in the creation of the modern Marvel universe, beginning with the publication of “Fantastic Four” #1 in 1961. The title was followed by “Amazing Spider-Man,” “The Incredible Hulk” and more, with Stan and his collaborators (most famously, Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko) pushing the boundaries of what comics could do. Stan stepped back from writing monthly comics in the early ’70s, but has maintained a connection with Marvel and the wider comics world ever since, and is still brimming with enthusiasm at 94 years of age.
