It's not easy being a mutant, but it's extra difficult if you're Jean Grey. Not only has the teenaged X-Man found herself thrust forward in time, she also has to deal with the knowledge that at some point she's likely destined to clash with the cosmic entity known as the Phoenix, an event that could literally have world-ending consequences.
So, no big deal, right?

Writer Cullen Bunn recently spoke with CBR about both his plans for Jean's X-Men Blue team during the current Secret Empire event, as well as what he has in store for Jean Grey, specifically, when she meets her future, Phoenix-possessed self as part of Marvel's upcoming Generations storyline.
"It's an encounter between Phoenix and someone that has been on my mind since my earliest days reading X-Men comics," Bunn said of the anticipated one-shot that will see Jean confront Jean. "It was the subject of many debates in my local comic shop when I was a kid.
"This story is absolutely following what my arch-nemesis [writer Dennis] Hopeless is writing in the Jean Grey series," Bunn added, explaining how his and artist R.B. Silva's story will impact Jean's solo series. "In that book, Jean is trying to avoid becoming host to the Phoenix, and this picks up on that thread. Jean will come away with something at the end of this story that helps shape who she will be in the days to come. You don’t have to read X-Men Blue or the Jean Grey series to follow this story, but the books all inform one another."
