As our pals at Spinoff Online reported yesterday, director DJ Caruso confirmed he will helm the project. He wrote on his Twitter page the following: “My deal just closed on ‘Preacher.’ Going back to the dark side and pretty fucking pumped!” Caruso has been the center of speculation regarding the film. He was also previously attached to an adaptation of “Y: The Last Man.”

ZOMBIES VS. ROBOTS
According to Deadline, Sony and Michael Bay’s Plantinum Dunes are teaming up to bring the IDW comic to the screen. “JT Petty has used the Ashley Wood/Chris Ryall-created comic as the basis for a spec script called ‘Inherit the Earth,'” they write. The plot involves “a young girl who is the last survivor on earth. She is protected by a group of robots from a pack of zombies that are intelligent and evolved.”
Release date: TBA
Comicus.it has an interview with David Mattey, an actor and stunt performer on the film. Unfortunately, he could not reveal his role in the movie, but he did discuss preparing for fight scenes and working with the director. “It was clear from talking to Kenneth Branagh that he had done his homework. He always knew why he wanted something a particular way, and it was based on information about the characters that he had clearly spent a lot of time and effort thinking about,” Mattey said. “As a result, we got a lot of great information to help with the development of each character.” Meanwhile, Marvel also released a couple of high-res images from the film, including this shot of Thor and Jane Foster:
Starring Chris Hemsworth, release date: May 6th, 2011
Malin Akerman (along with Kate Mara) discuss the superhero casting rumors with MTV News:
Meanwhile, Grant Morrison offers The Los Angeles Times Hero Complex blog a few things he’d like to see in a ‘Superman’ movie. “[I’d like] a non-camp Luthor, some other villains like Metallo or Brainiac and a more vigorous, go-getting Superman. The noble attempts to portray him as a Christ-like, American redeemer figure in ‘Superman Returns’ had the unfortunate effect of making him a limp and wimpy punch bag,” said Morrison. “Superman is a highly principled hero, but he’s no pacifist; he’s a brawler who doesn’t give in until he’s dead or the bad guy’s down, and I’d like to see a bit more of that grit.” I could not agree more. Superman needs to hit things with his fists.
Release date: 2012?
X-MEN: FIRST CLASS
Irish moviegoers will get an earlier look at “First Class,” according to Movies.ie (via Comic Book Movie) “The Irish release date for the X-Men prequel ‘First Class’ has been brought forward to Monday – May 30th 2011,” they write. “The film will now take the unusual step of opening on a Monday, something which worked very well for the Simon Pegg/Nick Frost film [‘Paul’] last week.”

THE SPIDEY PROJECT
The New York Times tells the unusual story of another musical project based on “Spider-Man.” Justin Moran, an improv comic and composer, will stage his own production at the Peoples Improv Theater one day before “Turn off the Dark” is expected to open. “Our goal is to do what [director Julie Taymor] should have done in the first place, and that’s just make a really good musical,” he explains to the Times. Moran also offers his take on the big-budget musical. “They’re doing it all wrong. They’re spending all this money on all the wrong things,” he says.
Opens: March 14th, 2011
Ksite has the trailer for the upcoming episode entitled “Fortune.”
THE MIND OF FINCHER
While my faith in director David Fincher will never be restored after “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” he is a director of note. Andrea Thompson has reprinted a list of twenty-six films the director cites as favorites. While there are some important works from the 1970s on there, I’m glad he was unashamed about loving “The Road Warrior.” Meanwhile, if any of you in the great, wide Internet discover something awesome, disheartening, or just plain weird, let us know! Take credit, come up with a clever nickname, or go anonymous. The choice is yours. Fresh rumors and movie news every weekday morning. I am Erik Amaya, bracing for the future threat of Fincher’s next picture.
