‘Powerpuff Girls’ Returning to Cartoon Network in 2016

Cartoon Network will return to Townsville in 2016 with a rebooted Powerpuff Girls series.

“The original Powerpuff Girls was a franchise phenomenon for Cartoon Network, paving the way for a new generation of innovative storytellers and enthusiastic fans worldwide,” Rob Sorcher, Cartoon Network’s chief content officer, said in a statement.  “We are calling these girls back into action based upon an overwhelming demand for sugar, spice and Chemical X.”

Created by Craig McCracken, The Powerpuff Girls aired from 1998 to 2004, following the adventures of three super-powered girls named Bubbles, Blossom and Buttercup, who were created by scientist Professor Utonium. The 78-episode ran also inspired a 2003 feature film, a 10th-anniversary special and, earlier this year, a reimagined CG-animated special.

It’s unknown whether McCracken, wasn’t involved in the January special, will participate in the new series.
