Apparently CBR readers knew something Hollywood did not — namely, don’t underestimate the team of Joss Whedon and Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.
Last week, CBR asked you to weigh in with your thoughts on how much Marvel Studios’ “The Avengers” would bring in over its first weekend in North American movie theaters, and over half of those voting (52.45%) correctly guessed it would break the $175 million barrier.
“Avengers” actually went on to surpass even the poll’s upper-tier choice of over $175 million, ultimately breaking the $207 million-mark from Thursday’s midnight screenings through Sunday. Adding in its overseas haul, the Joss Whedon-directed movie has already brought in over $650 million in its first 12 days of release, a number that surpasses the entire box office of “Iron Man 2,” the previous #1 Marvel film which finished its theatrical run with $623 million.
“The Avengers” stars Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Chris Evans as Captain America, Mark Ruffalo as the Incredible Hulk, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Clark Gregg as S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Phil Coulson, Cobie Smulders as S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Maria Hill and Stellan SkarsgÃ¥rd as Dr. Selvig.
