Mike Wazowski and James P. “Sully” Sullivan might be the best of friends in Monsters, Inc., but they weren’t always so close. As the Pixar prequel Monsters University will show us, it took a while for these two characters to really hit it off.
Two new images from the film have been released courtesy of Entertainment Weekly. In the first, which you can see above, Mike looks like he’s thrilled to be entering Monsters University. In the other, below, he doesn’t look quite so thrilled. He’s lifted up in Sully’s arms, and it seems as though he’s about to be thrown somewhere rather unpleasant.
“This is roughly around the time Mike and Sulley meet,” director Dan Scanlon explained of the image. “They’re at a fraternity party, and this is Mike and Sulley getting off on the wrong foot a little bit.”
The duo is definitely enemies in this picture, and the object in Mike’s hand is part of the reason he and Sully are fighting.
“It’s the monster equivalent of a farm animal. It is not a student,” Scanlon said. “This is part of a college prank.”
Monsters University is coming out 12 years after Monsters, Inc. first hit theaters, but producer Kori Rae said the wait will be worth it.
“We get to show off their differences,” she said. “They both approach life in different ways. Mike is the go-getter type, anything is possible, and he’s the super-hard worker. Sulley is different because he’s a great scarer, he has this natural ability, but Mike has to work for it.”
Billy Crystal, John Goodman and Steve Buscemi reprise their roles in Monsters University, which opens June 21. The official plot synopsis reads: “Mike Wazowski and James P. Sullivan are an inseparable pair, but that wasn’t always the case. From the moment these two mismatched monsters met they couldn’t stand each other. Monsters University unlocks the door to how Mike and Sulley overcame their differences and became the best of friends. Screaming with laughter and fun, Monsters University is directed by Dan Scanlon (Cars, Mater and the Ghostlight, Tracy) and produced by Kori Rae (Up, The Incredibles, Monsters, Inc.).”
