Just a week after word first circulated that Screen Gems wanted I Am Number Four star Alex Pettyfer for its take on Cassandra Clare’s bestselling fantasy series The Mortal Instruments, Vulture reports the young actor is passing on that adaptation in favor of another: Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures’ The Last Apprentice.
Known in the U.K. as The Wardstone Chronicles, Joseph Delaney’s bestselling young-adult fantasy is about a boy with second sight — he’s the seventh son a seventh son — trained by the County Spook, whose job it is fight ghosts, witches and creatures of the night.
The 20-year-old Pettyfer would of course play the apprentice, Thomas J. Ward, who’s only 12 when the series begins. According to Vulture, Jeff Bridges and Jennifer Lawrence (Winter’s Bone, X-Men: First Class) are being offered the roles of County Spook John Gregory and a suspected witch (presumably Alice Deane).
Sergey Bodrov (Nomad, Mongol: The Rise of Genghis Khan) is set to direct, which Vulture contends appeals to Pettyfer.
