A new trailer for Showtime's Penny Dreadful has debuted, showcasing the gothic tone and dark themes that John Logan's new upcoming drama.

"Do you believe that there is a demimonde — a half-world between what we know and what we fear?" asks Vanessa, a confidant woman played by Eva Green, as she lays out tarot cards on a table before Ethan Chandler, the protagonist played by Josh Hartnett. "A place in the shadows rarely seen, but deeply felt, where some unfortunate souls are forced to live always?"

"That sounds like a warning," Hartnett's Chandler responds solemnly.

"It's an invitation," Green's Vanessa grins in response.

At the Television Critics Association presentation this week, Penny Dreadful creator and showrunner John Logan spoke about his inspiration for the series and what fans can expect. "Growing up as a gay man before it was socially acceptable, I knew what it was to feel different, alienated and not like everyone else," Logan said of why he responds to literary monsters.

The likes of Frankenstein, Dorian Gray, Dracula and more literary monsters will collide when Penny Dreadful arrives on May 11.
