Paul Smith reflects upon early days of his comics career

If you’re like me, who only recently discovered that comics industry veteran artist Paul Smith has a website and is on Twitter, suffice to say you are in for a treat.

Earlier this week. he shared on Twitter a side-by-side comparison of his original 1980 Conan piece (not safe for work) next to the sanitized/clothed and fully colored version that appeared in King Conan #9.

The story of how a then still-trying-to-break-into-comics Smith ended up in the comic through a chance meeting with Roy Thomas makes for an interesting read. And it’s a tale that Smith recounts in detail at his blog. That’s just one of many treasures to behold at Smith’s website.

Below is a standalone version of the 1980 original for your enjoyment.
