Paul Reubens' alter ego Pee-wee Herman starred in an HBO special, a beloved children's television series and a pair of movies throughout the 1980s, and after all this time fans still want more. And soon they may get their wish.

"There's going to be a big announcement any minute now," Reubens told Rolling Stone. "It's been months and months of being right on the verge of being announced ... I thought something was going to go public yesterday, actually, and that you'd be the first person I'd be talking about this with. But I'm thinking there will be something made public very soon."

Reubens resisted clarifying the word "something," although it sounds like a new Pee-wee film is in the works. The actor did give a time frame for the mystery project, however. "It's going to get made shortly after the new year," he said. "I wish I could tell you about it right now, because ... I mean, it's amazing. It's going to be amazing. I think it first got leaked four years ago or so that the movie was going to be made, and ever since then it's just been stalling and stalling. So I'm really ready for this to happen. But I'm not kidding: It's very imminent."

Four years ago, director Judd Apatow spoke about teaming with Reubens for a new Pee-wee adventure.

"Let's face it, the world needs more Pee-wee Herman," Apatow told Variety in 2010. "I am so excited to be working with Paul Reubens -- who is an extraordinary and ground-breaking actor and writer. It's so great to watch him return with such relevance." According to Reubens' new interview, we should learn pretty soon whether Apatow is still involved with the project.
