It's something that's been talked about among Pacific Rim fans since the premiere of the first film -- wouldn't it only make too much sense if the Jaegers fought classic movie monsters like Godzilla and King Kong, along with the film's Kaiju? Turns out, Pacific Rim Uprising director Steven S. DeKnight feels like he it's at least possible.

According to a new interview, DeKnight said that he believes Pacific Rim could have a crossover with the Godzilla and Kong franchises.

"I won't say there's an Easter Egg but there's been a lot of discussion about that possibility of [crossing over]," DeKnight told Collider in a New York Comic Con interview. "Look, I think it would be fantastic to have the Pacific Rim universe join Legendary's Monster Universe, it seems like a natural step. And part of the big overall plan after the third movie we've talked about is that could happen, it's always a possibility. It's by far not a certainty; it's merely theoretical at this point, but as a fan myself, I would love to see that happen."

The franchise is definitely being set up for another sequel after Uprising; DeKnight said that while Uprising has a "definite ending," it's "very much open to the next chapter." But it remains unclear at this point if talks for a third film including crossing the monster streams. If the Jaegers do end up fighting Godzilla or King Kong -- or both -- it'd be a great day for kaiju lovers.

Pacific Rim Uprising starring John Boyega, is scheduled for release on March 23, 2018.
