Great news today for those among us who hate creatively bankrupt ideas. Universal Pictures has pulled the plug on its plans for Ouija, the McG-directed adaptation — I’m not sure that’s the right word — of the Hasbro board game. It’s not really a board game per se, but rather an amateur seance kit, sans candles and other New Age-y hippie crap.
Money is apparently at the heart of the studio’s decision, The Hollywood Reporter confirms. The budget was never revealed, but sources put it at “tentpole level,” and executives ultimately decided that the price wasn’t right. Hasbro wasn’t willing to deviate from the target number, so the project is no more at Universal.
The toy company will now take the opportunity to other studios, so a Ouija movie may well come to pass at some point. Let’s hope not, though. I’m fine with building a horror movie around the idea of seances, but let’s please cut all of this licensed crap. It just leaves a bad taste on everything. Place your product in the movie in a smart way, don’t make the movie for your product.
