Now in its third season, Adult Swim’s Eagleheart kicked off its panel at New York Comic Con with a teaser trailer full of blood, screaming, gunfire, puppets and Martin Sheen.
Stars Chris Elliott and Maria Thayer were joined by director Jason Woliner and executive producers Andrew Weinberg and Michael Korman, who spoke in great detail of what to expect from the show’s third season of the comedy, a parody of cop shows like Walker, Texas Ranger.
“This upcoming season of Eagleheart is all one story,” Elliott revealed of Season 3, subtitled “Paradise Rising.” “Each episode still has its own self-contained story, but there is a longer story that lasts the whole 10 episodes. So it’s almost like watching a feature film in 10 parts.”
“We thought it was an element missing in years past, and thought it’d be something to keep people engaged in the show,” Woliner added.
The overarching story revolves around the death of a major character, Brett, who dies within the first few minutes of the first episode.
In a clip shown during the presentation, Brett is resting peacefully in a coffin as the camera slowly pulls back to reveal he’s missing his entire midsection. A few minutes later, we learn Brett has accidentally fallen into a wood chipper and died, with Chris partly to blame.
The rest of the season is said to revolve around Chris and his quest to prove his innocence after he’s accused of murdering Brett. This, of course, changes the entire dynamic of the series, with the trio of Chris, Brett and Maria Thayer’s character Susie being whittled down to just two.
“It was fun to develop our characters a little bit more,” Thayer said. “The relationship actually evolves a little bit. There’s more of a friendship that develops with the characters.”
“This season, the writing is outstanding to me,” Elliott said. “This elongated plot line, there are so many twists and turns to it! They’re coming up with stuff that I could never think of. There are twists that happen that I only understand now that I didn’t understand while we were shooting.”
For example, in one of the episodes this season, Chris is possessed by the ghost of Martin Sheen, who gets shot at the beginning but is later revealed to be Joe Estevez, who happens to look exactly like his older brother Martin.
Opening up the discussion to questions, one fan touched upon a topic that everyone’s been wondering for a while now: What are the chances of an Eagleheart/NTSF:SD:SUV crossover? Suddenly, NTSF:SD:SUV star Paul Scheer popped up from the back of the audience.
“Well, when is it gonna happen?” Scheer demanded in jest. “I wanna know!
This is bullshit!”
Could a crossover be closer than we think? Perhaps. Until then, Eagleheart: Paradise Rising premieres Thursday, Nov. 14 at midnight on Adult Swim.
