As promised last week with the debut of a not-so-mysterious teaser video, Dark Horse confirmed this morning at New York Comic Con that it will partner with game developer CD Projekt RED for a comic series based on The Witcher, with Paul Tobin on board as writer.

Based on the bestselling fantasy novels and short stories by Andrzej Sapkowski, the hack-and-slash role-playing game follows Geralt, one of the few remaining “witchers,” traveling monster hunters for hire.

"The story is almost entirely mine," Tobin, writer of such comics as Colder, Bandette and Plants vs. Zombies: Lawnmageddon, tells Newsarama. "Projekt RED and I decided on a direction during a meeting, but it was more of a feel... a story type... that they were asking for, rather than establishing any plot points. With that in mind, I came up with a couple possibilities, and then they stepped back and let me do my thing. They've been fabulous to work with, trusting us with Geralt and his world, letting Dark Horse and I do what we do best."

Neither the artist nor the release date was mentioned.

UPDATE: In a press release, Dark Horse announced a March 19 debut for The Witcher, which will feature interior art by Joe Querio (Lobster Johnson, B.P.R.D.) and covers by Dave Johnson (100 Bullets). There's also a synopsis:

Traveling near the edge of the Black Forest, in the land of the Angren, monster hunter Geralt meets a widowed man whose dead and murderous wife resides in an eerie mansion known as the House of Glass, a place of endless rooms where horror waits around every corner. Geralt will have to use all his witcher prowess to solve the manor’s mystery and survive.
