Admissions first: I have never bought, nor read, a single issue of “Nova” in any incarnation. I am passingly familiar with the character, but can honestly say the helmet frequently gave me pause from even picking up an issue of “Nova” to flip through. This week, however, I issued a challenge to myself to reach for a title in my reviews. I’ve had worse reaches, that’s for certain.
This issue gives me the familiar setting of Project: P.E.G.A.S.U.S. and the familiar plot of “Skrulls attack”, so I had that going for me upon opening the cover. From there, the action just goes and goes. Nova is in the heart of it all, and during this trial, he has the added complexity of trying to establish a new understanding of some aspect of his power set, as the Worldmind is removed from Nova’s arsenal, but placed online with the systems at P.E.G.A.S.U.S. Otherwise, the story has a great deal of fisticuffs and explodicuffs (yeah, I made that up, but it fits).
The art is compelling and oddly coherent, given the large number of characters flowing through the battle within the halls of P.E.G.A.S.U.S. Hanna’s inks bring a Pelletier vibe to the whole appearance of the book, and I think that’s partially attributable to Hanna’s experience and partially assigned to the pencilers, of whom I am completely unfamiliar.
That said, this book is high-octane and obviously a distant relation to Abnett and Lanning’s work over on “Guardians of the Galaxy”. For my first exposure to Nova and his world, I am compelled to check it out again, especially with the added wink and nod from Abnett and Lanning for dubbing the Director of P.E.G.A.S.U.S. “Gruenwald”. A nice touch to the pioneer of a number of ideas appearing in this issue.
